Vista UAC wasn't really broken. It prompted way too often and so was _inconvenient_, and couldn't be triggered automatically by the system without being requested by an application, so was far from ideal. But it served its purpose -- prompting when elevation was requested by an application.

With Windows 7's default setting for UAC this is no longer the case. It will not prompt when elevation is requested, not even for the first time, by a Microsoft-signed executable, which allows plenty of end-runs around this "security" feature. You cannot have these end-runs around Vista UAC or Windows 7 UAC at the highest setting (which is not the default).

So UAC is broken -- well I think we all knew that -- and what does microsoft do about it?
Break it some more! Brilliant, I wonder what genius came up with that one.

Thanks for the kind sentiment. This is actually replicated from another blog, http://prototyped.livejournal.com/ and rest assured, I have been congratulated for it. :)

This was half a year ago. Since then, I have applied for a visa, the Tier 1 (General) migrant status under their new Points-Based System, under the transitional arrangements for HSMP work permit holders. I expect to know whether my bid succeeded or failed in about a month's time.

Wish me luck!

Thanks for the link

Thanks for the link, and for your honesty about India. I also appreciated the bit about how expensive India really is. For example, I happen to know that the average guy working at a dhaba might make 50Rs a day. A meal at the same dhaba is at least 30Rs.

Even when I was a waiter back in America making $50 a day, a meal at the average restaurant where I worked was about $10. In other words, in a normal non-star restaurant, a meal would never cost a day's salary.

Similarly, when I made $50 or $75 a day, the bus ride was 50 cents. Compare that to a guy making 50Rs a day and the bus ride is 10Rs!

I am afraid that NRIs and foreigners like myself are driving up the cost of living for the average Ravi, and I don't like that.

Hi Vincent,

I used the Debian stock kernels, since they incorporate various bugfixes and patches over the kernel.org kernel. They support all the functionality of the laptop adequately.

Hi,

Very interesting post. I have the same hardware and I would like to optimize it too because with recent apps, the system is not really usable.

I choosed Debian Sid to and some "light weight" applications (xfce, opera)

I use a generic kernel provided by debian packages and I wonder if it would not be better to use a custom kernel but I'm not a kernel guru.
Did you compile a customized kernel? If yes, could you send me your .config by email?

Thank you.
